OUR CHINESE FLEA MARKET TREASURES

A little perseverance and a lot of haggling, we came home with a few finds.

Reverse glass mirror painting of Lady and Cat.  Usually these come in pairs.  These period paintings from the 18th c-19th c  were depicted to appeal to merchants and sailors visiting China on long journeys.  We just loved it; especially the crazy looking cat.   Not sure about the age of this painting, but it came from the shop keeper, Deng Gui Fen's family.  If you are ever at Panjiayuan Flea market in Beijing, visit her shop, No.75.  She's one of the nicest people.

Cast Buddha from Shanxi region.

Johnny couldn't resist the Cultural Revolution porcelain statues.  Our little Red Guards do look cute defying their darker side of violence and oppression on those who went against the teachings of Mao or those who criticized him.  They'll make great garden gnomes for our yard.

We adopted two Chinese clone babies.  We didn't find these at the flea markets, but at twocities gallery in Shanghai.  These nutty ceramic cherubs are by artist Xuhongbo.
