KYOTO: KOBO-SAN MARKET

08.21.2009 Japanese Vending Machine Product of the Day: Qoo Juice. Cute marketing from Coca-cola. Apple juice that comes in a cool aluminum bottle.

Kobo-San Market. Held at To-Ji Shrine on the 21st of each month, this market has thousands of vendors selling bric-a-brac, plants, tools, food, some antiques, fabrics and pottery. The guide book had noted that this market is open from dawn to dusk, but it seemed like by 5 pm most of the vendors had packed up. The best items sold at this market were the ceramics from different local potters. It was hard to restrain ourselves from buying up everything! We're coming home with a few pieces. Most of the pictures from the market I just realized are all food related shots. Must have been pregnancy hunger.

the scent of genmaicha - green tea with toasted and popped corn wafts through the market

beautiful natural yarns
Golden buddha, one of many of our flea market treasures. The ceramic pagodas were gifts from one of the ceramists whom we bought some plates from.

Dinner at Okonomiyaki Kiraku. Popular local restaurant near our hotel that is open late until 10pm. Everyone sits around these stainless steel hot plates and waits for their food made to order. This was by far the best okonomiyaki we have tried so far.

Asparagus wrapped in bacon

Egg omelet with pork

Okonomiyaki with shrimp, pork, squid, topped with spring onions
